Why Should I Adopt from a Rescue?

Updated: Aug 20, 2023

I would never judge anyone for buying Guinea Pigs from a pet shop. I’ve done it myself. For many people, it’s just the most accessible way to get a pet. However, there is concern about the breeding practices used by some pet shops and also the unsuitable cages and products sold to go with the pets. In addition, many places do little to no checks on the potential owners. So, if you can, please try and support a rescue, and here’s why…

1) The obvious one is you would be providing a loving home for guinea pigs that desperately need one, and by adopting you support the rescue in being able to help more piggies

2) At a pet shop, you generally choose by colour. With rescue, you can choose by temperament. Do you want quiet piggies who love a snooze? Or active little ones you can watch all day?

3) If you are looking for a pet to be enjoyed by children, pet shops may not be the best choice. Generally the babies there are around 8 weeks old, babies are very cute, I get it. When you get them home they will be skittish and fast, some children will lose confidence very quickly and lose interest in the pet. Older piggies are generally easier to handle. I try to ensure all my rescues will at least eat from your hand before they leave for a new home.

4) When you adopt from a rescue, you also have access to support and advice to help you along your way. If circumstances change, most rescues will happily take the piggies back.
