How do I choose the right vet for my Guinea Pigs?

Vets do a fantastic job! Unfortunately, due to the fact that Guinea Pigs are classed as an exotic pet, it can be tricky to find a vet with the training and experience to treat them.

Fun fact: I had grand plans of becoming a vet myself until I passed out on the floor during work experience as a teenager!

Ask lots of questions

In my experience, most vets will happily tell you how comfortable they feel treating Guinea Pigs. They may be able to refer you to another vet they know. Ask about their out-of-hours service - some emergency clinics will only cater to cats and dogs, and will only euthanise small furries out of hours.

Ask for recommendations

One of the best ways to find a Guinea Pig vet is to speak to other Guinea Pig owners in the area...or ask your local rescue who they use.

Go with your gut

If something doesn't feel right, there is no shame in asking for a second opinion. If your vet says something that feels like a red flag, for example, if they suggest starving your piggie before a procedure.
